Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 0.33 cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt divided
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3 large yellow onions sliced
  • 1 cup white cheddar cheese shredded

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. In a large bowl, combine yeast, water, and sugar. Stir and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, and half of the salt.
  3. Pour half the oil mixture into the yeast mixture. Set the remaining oil mixture aside.
  4. Add flour to the oil and yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  5. Add dough to a greased bowl and cover with a towel. Let it rest for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Meanwhile, caramelize the onions.
  6. In a large skillet over medium heat, add butter, onions, and sugar. Cook until onions are caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  8. Pour the reserved oil mixture into the bottom of a 9x11-inch baking dish. Use a pastry brush to coat the dish.
  9. Transfer the risen dough to the baking dish, spreading to the edges and creating dimples with your fingers.
  10. Top the dough with half of the salt, shredded cheese, and caramelized onions.
  11. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden and cheese is melted. Serve warm.
