Preparation Steps
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir until dissolved and let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
- Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Punch down the dough and shape into a long baguette. Place on a baking sheet.
- Make several diagonal slashes on the top of the dough with a sharp knife.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
